Checkered Flag Quilt Block

This Nascar inspired quilt block is the perfect block to remember every race. Remeber who won every race you’ve gone to with this checkered flag quilt block.

This month’s Quilt Block Mania theme is sports. I am not a sports girl though. I’m typically the one saying “Go Sportsball!” It’s not like I don’t watch any sports, if I’m home I’ll watch Mizzou football and Baylor & Mizzou basketball. If the Chiefs are on I’ll watch them too. The thing is none of those excite me enough to design something new or write an entire blog post about.

Then it hit me, Nascar, Nascar is the one sport that I never miss a race. I record them all and I even switched my TV provider just so I wouldn’t miss any Xfinity races. The down side is EVERYTHING in Nascar is copyrighted or a registered trademark. I certainly didn’t have time to request permission to use something. So what could I do? I opted for a checkered flag quilt block that could be personalized.

This quilt block is a great way to bust those scraps up! No two blocks in your final quilt need to be exactly the same.

Checkered Flag Quilt Block

This is a fairly quick block to make and is completely customizable. It would make a great quilt for the Nascar fan in your life by making a block for each race they have attended. You can use your embroidery machine or HTV (heat transfer vinyl) to add the track and winner of the race.

Supplies Needed

Fat Quarter of each of the following colors – black, white, blue, and gray

Tips For Making The Checkered Flag Quilt Block

The pattern is written for fat quarters and strip set to make the checkered flag. If you have a bunch of 2 1/2 squares in black and white already cut, use those!

If you are using a strip set the smaller your sets, the more you will need so you have room to straighten your starting edge. For example, if you have a 10″ strip you will only be able to get 3 units out of it because you will sacrifice a little to get a straight edge.

HAVE FUN!! I used a narrow satin stitch to “attach” the flag to the pole. You can use a decorative stitch, a car would be fun, or even some scrap vinyl. Remember if you are using vinyl it needs to be heat transfer so it doesn’t wash off.

Note About My Finished Block

I had fully intended to use my Cricut to personalize my quilt block. The first problem is that I have taken all of my HTV to the school. I have been doing crafts with the kiddos and not a huge issue I’ll just go in over the weekend. The second problem is that we had an ice storm on Saturday and a blizzard on Sunday. I’m still snowed in. Hopefully, someday soon I’ll be able to access my vinyl stash.
