Adorable Free Snowman Wall Hanging Pattern

Beginner quilter friendly snowman wall hanging pattern

“Oh the weather outside is frightful” When a quilter starts their winter projects the frightful weather is usually 100 degrees outside. To get in the holiday spirit, in July, in Kansas, I usually play a few Christmas songs and try to remember that the melting heat will soon be replaced with frigid winds. This snowman wall hanging was just what I needed to forget all about the melting heat outside.

Christmas in July Make Along with Underground Crafter

What I love the most about this wall hanging is that it lends itself to customization. You can change the background, the scarf, and the hat ribbon to match your decor, use up some fabric scraps, or just make it fit your personality. I used Moda Grunge fabrics because Moda is widely available. If you don’t know where your local quilt shop is you can check our Quilt Shops Across North America or you can order the fabric through the links below.

Before We Start

Since there are only a few sewing projects as part of The Underground Crafter Christmas in July blog hop I’ve written this for beginner sewist. The printed pattern linked is written in typical pattern form and is free as a sign-up to my newsletter.

The video demo does not cover cutting fabric or making half-square triangles, there are separate posts with videos that focus on those steps. The printed pattern has a QR code that will bring you back to this page so that you can easily find those detailed instructions and video easily.

Don’t worry if you’ve never quilted before, as long as you have a basic understanding of sewing you can do this snowman wall hanging. The large pieces help hide a multitude of mistakes. Those big pieces also get this wall hanging done in a shorter amount of time.

Supplies Needed For Snowman Wall Hanging

If you are new to quilting be sure to look at our quilting tools list and if you need a sewing machine I have a list of the best sewing machines.

I did use some different fabrics in my mockup vs my actual wall hanging to show you that you can change things up or maybe when you walk into your local quilt shop a different fabric will speak to you. That’s why I changed my green, when I saw a green named Myrtle I had to get it because that was my grandma’s name. Maybe green isn’t your color so pick something that is, there are so many colors available!

If you opt to get the printable pattern you will get diagrams on how to maximize your fabric and keep scraps to a minimum. If you need help cutting fabric check out our cutting fabric strips post.

Constructing Your Snowman Wall Hanging

All measurements are in inches and all the seam allowances are 1/4“.

We are going to start by making half square triangles also known as HSTs. We are going to be using the two-at-a-time method but for two of them, we only need one HST. The two-at-a-time method is easier than sewing bias edges. I will toss those extra HSTs into my bonus triangle basket for a future project. You are welcome to use any method that works for you but will need to adjust fabric needs and cutting instructions.

Making Half Square Triangles

On the backside of the following squares draw a diagonal triangle.

  • 6 3/4” snowman, pair right sides together (RST) with background 6 3/4
  • 4 1/2” snowman, pair RST with background 4 1/2
  • 4 1/2” snowman, pair RST with 4 1/2” nose
  • 3 1/2” background, pair RST with 3 1/2” scarf

Sew 1/4″ on both sides of the line you drew. Cut on the drawn line and press as follows:

  • 6 3/4” squares toward the background fabric
  • 4 1/2” background/snowman toward the background fabric
  • 4 1/2” snowman/nose toward the nose fabric
  • 3 1/2” toward the darkest fabric either background or scarf

If you are new to HSTs please use the link above for detailed instructions on how to square up the units. Trim HSTs to the following sizes:

  • 6 3/4” snowman/background to 5 3/4
  • 4 1/2” snowman/background and snowman/nose to 3 1/2
  • 3 1/2” background/scarf to 2 1/2
